CAWA Bulletins and Documentary Film

Title of the practice

CAWA Bulletins and a CAWA Documentary Film Raising awareness of the issues related to demographic change and workforce ageing through case studies and worker’s real life stories. Usage of written and audiovisual media.

Precise theme/issue tackled by the practice

To alert employers, older workers and other stakeholders of the importance of demographic change and workforce ageing and to provide examples of innovative solutions in an accessible format.

Objectives of the practice

The overall aim was to raise awareness and point out innovative practices in a creative way through the usage of audiovisual media, but not solely dependent on the internet.

Location

The bulletins contained case study and reports from each of the four partner countries. The film covers four real life experiences in two countries, namely the UK and Sweden.

Detailed description of the practice

CAWA Bulletins

We were aiming to reach workers and employers less familiar with electronic media and hence published three editions of a newsletter, called the CAWA Bulletin. These collated details of some of the European case studies, included pictures and the best practice advice. Bulletins were published in English, Swedish, Spanish and German and distributed through the national social partner networks . All information was also published through the project website: www.olderworker.eu

CAWA Documentary Film

We commissioned a documentary film to professional filmmakers and the film tells the stories of four older workers: two based in the UK: a London based bus driver and a gas engineer and two based in Sweden: a secondary school teacher and a construction worker. The film was translated into the four project languages and provides a forum for discussion among older workers themselves, employers and other stakeholders. It highlights best practices implemented by some employers and is a more creative way to get messages and examples of good practice across to a wider audience than written reports.

Evaluation

Feedback on the usage and comments on the content of the bulletins and film from the stakeholders. The usage and impact of the film in particular exceeded the lifetime of the project.

Lessons learnt from the practice

The usage of different media, including written bulletin and a documentary film enhanced the profile and accessibility of the best practices.

Relevant factors/conditions for the transfer of the good practice

Involvement and engagement by employers, the relevant social partners and regional authorities.
